Chris Carroll from Patagonia just posted some nice math on the costs savings of his commuting by bike:
- 22 years of solid riding
- 10years of 200 miles per week = 104,000 miles
- 12 years of 150 miles per week = 93,600 miles
TOTAL MILES =197,600 MILES
- at average of 25 miles per gallon of gas = 7,904 gallons
- at an average of $2.50 per gallon x 7,904 = $19,760.00
My own savings isn't as impressive as I only commute 60 miles a week and have only been doing it for 2.5 years. However, every thing helps.

Actually, the cost of gas is the least of your expenses. According to the commuting calculator at the bottom of this site, wear & tear on your car (assuming it was worth about $20,000) would be more than double what you calculated for gas!

Chris (or more appropriately -- Jimmy) I apologize if my post offended you. I am new to the blogosphere, and did my best to read up on etiquette before starting to participate.
per most of the resources I read, "spamming" is off-topic posts made solely for providing traffic to their site.
I was simply pointing out that the savings was actually triple what was calculated because gas is only part of the equation, and rather than a long winded explanation, I referenced the resource where I actually did my calculation.
Would you enlighten me how I could have better participated? Is it actually a faux pas to include links?

No worries. I am actually not Chris. Although he is a great friend of mine and according to both of our wives we do think pretty much identically.
On the spam thing though, I do have trouble understanding how commuting costs is related to real estate in Denver, CO.
Sorry for any confusion. I could care less about Denver real estate (which is why I didn't link with "denver real estate" but instead used the words "commuting calculator).
They just had a very useful calculator that breaks down costs of commuting, wear & tear on car, value of time, etc. Since Chris' post talked about how much he saved by not driving, I was trying to point out that gas alone wasn't all he saved ;-)
